I got the sweetest email today from a fan who was visiting NYC and managed to hunt down my cupcakes at the Dean & Deluca on 40th st and 8th ave. Here is a snippet from the email she sent me and some images taken from her blog.

Thank you so much for your cupcakes =) This one was our favorite and so was the maple bacon and salted chocolate. Ahh, we loved them so much; they DEFINITELY lived up to its reputation! Now if only my bf would propose to me I'd be scheduling you to cater our wedding =P just kidding... kinda heh.

Well....the folks AT Kumquat Cupcakery got married!
This last month both Megan (head cupcake baker) and I acquired new last names, a ring, and a best friend for life.

Bill and I were a bit sneaky about our wedding. We invited both our families together for a fun filled weekend in NY and upon arriving told them that we were getting married......the next day! It was truly amazing. My cousin dario married us by the water in east river park in Williamsburg, and then we all went back to his place to devour amazing cheese and champagne before heading to a loooooong celebratory dinner at Pastis. If only we could do that everyday.....

Party at Victoria Secrets

Yesterday morning, my crew and I delivered 1,500 cupcakes to Victoria Secrets. They were having a employee appreciation day which included massages, manicures, CUPCAKES, gift bags, and a giant game show spinning wheel things (do they have a name??). I'm hoping no Kumquat employees read this - the way I show appreciation is with a hug! :)

The display was beautiful, and as one of the women who works there pointed out, it looks very vintage. I love that.

Brooklyn Winery pics & video!

Last night at The Brooklyn Winery was so much fun.....seriously so. much. fun! The folks who work there are all so nice and accommodating, and the atmosphere is cozy and beautiful. My type of place.

There was only a few dozen folks who came through so I was able to sit and really talk to them about the business, or what they are interested in seeing from the biz. It wasn't a mob of people grabbing for free cupcakes - definitely a breath of fresh air.

They don't know it yet, but I think I might ask to do it again in the next coming months. ;)

I was able to corner Nichelle from Cupcakes Take the Cake and get a video of her trying the Port & Cherry cupcake (the winning flavor of the night).

What happens when you combine a cookie and a cupcake??

Amazingness happens.

Below is a video of the moment I thought to take our homemade chocolate cookie dough and put it smack dab in the middle of a cupcake.

I wasn't sure if it was going to make a big difference, or just taste like a normal chocolate and vanilla cupcake, but upon biting into it I knew this creation was going to have to stick around for awhile. Think dense buttery cake cut with chewy chocolate cookie, gooey frosting with a little cookie crunch on top. ummm, yeah. not too shabby.

My friend Abi (a chocolate connoisseur/lover/critic) got the privilege of trying the first one. There wasn't a lot of speaking while she was eating it, but there was a lot of eye rolling and cooing.

We will be shipping these off to Dean & Deluca as well as bringing them to the Brooklyn Flea starting next week.

FLAVOR OF THE WEEK! Port, Cherry & Ricotta

Holy Mama! This cupcake's a doozy! I don't think I have to try to hard to sell you on this one. Instead I'll just show you a bunch of photos......

I boiled a pound of dried cherries in port mixed with a little orange zest to start. After they cooled a bit I separated the cherries from the port syrup and pureed it into a cherrie paste that I folded into the cake. Which you can see in the image below.....

How pretty is that little guy?? The cherries add a tiny bit of tartness which I love.

I then used a TON of ricotta for the frosting. In foresight I should have contacted Betsy of Salvatore Brooklyn Ricotta and gotten theirs.....but that's what I get for being so last minute with things. I used a pretty good ricotta from a amish farm upstate.

Now, I have to say, I am probably the worlds biggest chocolate fan. As a kid my two favorite deserts were chocolate mousse and flourless chocolate cake. I've spent my life searching out a chocolate creation that was too rich for me, but at the same time creating ultimate bliss in my mouth. Well folks, today was the day! We DID IT. This is the most ridiculous concoction I've ever made, and this is coming from a lady who puts bacon on a cupcake!

Colleen is new to the cupcake world, but I've known her since she was a wee little lass. She lived directly across the street from me in our small hometown of Mount Vernon WA, and her dad was my acting teacher in high school! I might add I got lead in one of the school plays, but it's not a big deal. (big winky face)

Here are a few pictures of a fun Valentines cupcake tier I set up this evening. The funny thing about this order, was that it was one of my teachers from Parsons who was doing the ordering! We both didn't know, however, till about halfway through the ordering process when we both put a face to our unusual names (hers being Agnieszka).
Turns out she's put a hold on teaching for awhile to focus on her design company called Kiss Me I'm Polish. They just moved into a swanky new office space in lower Manhattan so the party was both a celebration of the space and of the day of love. ;)

What I like about this set up are the bacon cupcakes. Who would have thought bacon could fit into a frilly cupcake display so flawlessly??

Megan had the day off today so I was in the kitchen all by my lonesome making Valentines cupcakes for Thomas PINK's holiday party. Here is a little video I took when I got bored of boxing cupcakes. The power to video on my camera is my new favorite thing EVER.
Megan is usually the one baking and she is much cleaner than me if you were concerned. ;)
Also! I know I say "happy valentines day" at the end even though it's still 5 days away, but for bakers the entire two weeks leading up to vday somehow feel like one long valentines day. Do you feel me fellow bakers??

Cupcake delivery gone awry!!

Today as I gazed out the window to 19inches of snow covering brooklyn I claimed, "the snow can not win!! People need their cupcakes!" With this in mind I hopped in my car and drove all over manhattan and downtown Brooklyn with no problem. I approached Dumbo for my last delivery and discovered there was a serious lack of snow plows in the area. Feeling good I thought, "not a problem! I'm not going to get stuck!".........I did. Luckily it was only a few blocks from the party we were catering, so in the 2 hours it took the tow truck to get there I was able to (in flimsy converse mind you) walk over 300 cupcakes to the venue and set them up before the party started. The show must go on!

Here's a little funny video of me and my very loyal helper Bill getting hoisted up on a tow truck. I got a pretty big kick out of it.

For the second year in a row we will be setting up shop at the Village Voice food event Choice Eats! I have been to a lot of food parties in my days of owning Kumquat, but this one might take the cake (so to speak). Imagine 60 restaurants and 2000 very hungry new yorkers (most likely bloggers) all smooshed into one venue together. Sound fun??? It totally is.

Last year we were on the lower level in the VIP room, but this year we will be joining the chaos on the main floor. We will be setting up by the door so you can grab a sweet treat before heading back into the brisk streets of midtown.

Will I see you there?? Hope so!

We have new flavors! Megan and I spent some time paying in the kitchen today and came up with these three new flavors that we will be bringing to the market this weekend, and if all goes well sending off to Dean & Deluca on Monday.

HELLO! Welcome back! How ARE you?? How were your holiday festivities? The whole season went surprisingly smooth here at Kumquat. One of the new additions you might have noticed if you took a trip to the Brooklyn Flea market during the Gifted Market is our shiny new jars of Caramel Sauce! We have two different flavors at the moment and are working on more! Maybe a KUMQUAT flavor??? It's about time after all...

You can now find Kumquat Cupcakes at the brand new store/creativity free for all Make Meaning on the Upper West Side. It's really possibly the cuttest store I've walked through in a long time - I really wanted to just rent a table and throw some glitter and paint on a porcelain horse.....seriously. Here are a few pictures I snapped of what was left in the display cases. They make my cupcakes look sooo pretty.

Party Favors

For those of you who have known about Kumquat for awhile, you probably know that I'm not so great at updating the website to include all of our products. This is going to change....I swear....hopefully.... However, word still seems to get around (thank you blog and twitter) and we get tons of orders for things like our secret flavors (chocolate w/salted caramel and the new gingerbread are a few) and cupcake favors for weddings and holiday parties. This past weekend for instance we got the biggest party favor order we've ever received! 300 favors wrapped in 600 little individual boxes and then tied together with ribbon. wow, did I underestimate the amount of manual labor that would go into packaging. The ribbon alone took about an hour and a half!

We ended up being late for the delivery, and terrified of the scowling faces we were going to get upon arriving. But when we showed up we walked in to the jolliest most loving group of professionals I've ever met. Really, just think of that one really nice aunt that always wants to hear about what you're doing and then sneaks you candy after dinner. That's them!

Here is a great article in food spotting about a workshop my friend Amy Cao, hosted a few weekends ago. How amazing is the first picture??

"Foodspotting joined forces with Levi's Workshops in New York City last week to do what we do best - take food photos! Leading our food photography workshop were ace New York City photography pros who brought their wealth of knowledge from every field - editorial, portrait,celebrity and, of course, food. Not only did we eat a lot of Kumquat Cupcakes who generously donated miniature treats for the photo session, we learned to master our SLRs and point-and-shoots! But the most exciting thing for our app users? Foodspotters left knowing how to improve their phone pictures too! (The Cross Process app is kinda awesome if I do say so myself.)

We can't wait to host more of these gatherings to learn more and so we can meet you all. Everyone who came to the workshop were amazing too. You guys are a ridiculously sweet bunch!"

Levi's recently hired her and her partner to make a commercial for their new site shapewhatstocome.com. In the words of levi's it's "an online community based around shared interests and passions, regardless of age or location. It's a place where we can seek perspective and support from women like ourselves…and maybe not like ourselves."
It's so beautiful and inspiring to watch -- and if you watch close enough you might just see me messing around with some flour and sugar. :)

To retweet myself from earlier this evening," I substituted all meals today for test bites of cake, frosting, cookies, and crisp.......I yearn for some raw broccoli." Yes, I may have a slight (major) tummy ache, and yes my pants might be a little tighter than when I started baking this morning, but gosh darn it, you gotta sacrifice some things for the good of the cupcake! And believe me kids, it was worth it -- the new flavors are scrumdidlyumcious.

Wedding at the Bowery Hotel

I'm no stranger to the Bowery Hotel having been invited the last 3 years in a row to the MS Benefit Auction, but I've never seen it quite like this -- giant bouquets of white flowers on top of dark wood tables, a wooden alter in front of a giant fire place, and a heated outdoor patio that wraps around two sides of the building. I was blown away, and excited to get to showcase my cupcakes amidst all of it's old school New York charm. I was also excited to get to show my mom and sister (who were in town for the marathon) the ropes of the cupcake biz!

Cupcake of the Week!! RUM RAISIN!

I'm SUPER excited about this weeks cupcake - Rum Raisin! The cake is going to be filled with raisins that have been soaking for over 24 hours in rum, topped with a rum spiked caramel frosting, a raisin and a dash of cinnamon. It's so. darn. yummy.

Those of you who are VERY observant might notice that I used about 25 mini packs of raisins. Why the mini packs?? Because they are mini cupcakes?? No, I'm not that crazy. I just forgot to buy them at a normal wholesale or retail store so I had to buy them at the little organic bodega next to my kitchen. This tends to happen every so often with things like bacon, powdered sugar, eggs, redbull......and I do believe the woman who runs it is starting to get concerned about my eating habits. I'm hoping for a possible bodega intervention.

HAPPY SATURDAY BLOGOSPHERE!

Well, it's happening.....I'm getting antsy. I need to play with my food. Luckily this benefits all of you fine folk!! Starting TODAY, I will start bringing limited edition flavors to the saturday and sunday Brooklyn Flea Market. They might be around for a few weeks, they might only be around for a day -it all depends on how you like them! I'll be TWITTERING the flavors the day before so you know what you are in for that weekend.

Here are a few pictures I took while playing with the caramel that goes on top of the Apple Ginger. I really felt like a channeled Jackson Pollock while making these - but I can assure you there are no cigarette butts on my work of art. ;)

Kumquat Cupcakery on the Cooking Channel

I just realized I never blogged about this!!

A few months back I met up with Daryl of Drink Up! on the Cooking channel to mix a few cocktails and eat some cupcakes. It was fun....I guess. ;)

Unfortunately the folks at Red Velvet Lounge and I had a few disagreements, and I won't be serving my cupcakes there anymore. It's just too bad - it was a cool idea and the cupcakes were pretty darn delicious. Maybe one day I'll get my liquor licence and be able to get these bad boys on the market again!

Christie's, Kumquat, and Will Cotton

I first heard about Will Cotton when I was an illustration major at Parsons back in 2004. Being a huge fan of anything sweet, and having just become majorly obsessed with oil painting, it wasn't surprising that I was quickly drawn to his work. These days I seem to find myself spending much more of my time admiring cupcakes than I do art, so I was thrilled when Christies contacted me and asked if I could cater a lecture he was giving in the auction space.
It was so interesting to hear how he executes his paintings (he actually creates real life sized laughy taffy trees for the models to lounge about in), and hear how he tried to open a bakery mid painting career (it stayed open for about a year).

Get Real NY and other events....

Get Real NY, Atlantic Antic, Brooklyn Flea, and a whole lotta parties put me into cupcake overload this last weekend.
As much as I love fall for it's spicy flavors, colder weather (no melting!!!!), and onslaught of family and holidays, I sometimes forget all the hard work that comes with all it's coziness. This last weekend quickly made me remember....

First thing on the agenda: prep batter and frosting.

Here is megan presenting 39 pounds of frosting to the camera......I would love to go back and show this picture to 6 year old keavy.

This is what 180 dozen cupcakes looks like.

And here is the end product of all our hard work. Aren't they so purdy.

At least at the end of it all I got to sit down with more than a few really delicious beers. I even got "Dr. Bill" - a pairer from San Diego - to pair my cupcakes with different beers at the event. They all worked beautifully, and I highly suggest playing around if you can get your hands on any of the beers (and cupcakes) I've listed below.....

Imagination Playground Ribbon Cutting

Serious Eats Cupcake Competition

How much fun is this?? I'm a long time fan of Serious Eats, and have always loved their "best.....in NY" competitions. So when I learned that we were part of one, I was just tickled. Out of 47 bakeries we were picked to be part of the final 12 favs. We ended up getting 5th place (which is not too shabby for a cupcake shop with no actual location!), but Baked took the prize and won best overall cupcake. Now, I've tried Baked's cupcakes and think they are pretty good - whether I would eat one of their cupcakes over one of ours? well, no comment.

Food and Wine Magazine just put together this great slide show of different savory cupcakes. Some of the cupcakes (like mine) are sweet and savory, but the majority are completely savory!
I'm telling you, this completely savory cupcake business is going to catch on - it's just a matter of time before all the cupcake bakers start to loose their sweet tooth and crave things like meatloaf and potato chips.

Red Velvet Lounge

I'm happy to announce that Kumquat Cupcakery has now taken over Baked by Melissa's role of cupcake baker at Red Velvet Lounge!
I must be honest I was a little skeptical when the guys of the Status Group approached me with this new task. I had heard some mixed reviews of the place from Cupcakes Take The Cake and Yelp, and wasn't sure how my Brooklyn side felt about the prospect of making cupcake for a New York nightclub. However, after I got to talking with the guys my mindset started to change - this was going to be so much fun! I haven't created a new cupcake in a very long time, let alone one that was meant to get you a little tipsy. I ran back to my kitchen and set to work making the best darn vodka drenched cupcakes you've ever tasted.....and by god, I think I might have done it! These cupcakes are so tasty and moist that I accidentally got drunk at 9am in my kitchen when I may have "taste tested" a few too many. I have yet to take pics, but below are the flavors they will be serving through the summer.

Svedka Cherry - Vanilla cake folded with fresh cherries and bits of dark chocolate, topped with svedka cherry vodca, chocolate frosting and dark chocolate shavings.
Absolute Brooklyn - Vanilla cake folded with fresh apple chunks and grated ginger, topped with absolute brooklyn, vanilla frosting and gold sugar.
Chocolate Pomegranate - Chocolate cake drenched in pomegranate liquor, and topped with a spicy white chocolate frosting.
Red Velvet - Just classic old red velvet (virgin)

Ohhhhhh how I have been slacking on my blogger duties! I always thought it was funny that companies hire professional bloggers to do all their blogging and tweeting, but I'm kinda starting to see the appeal. However, it'll be some time before I can hire an impostor keavy to write for me.

I got a frantic call yesterday from the Lily who runs Dandelion Wine in Greenpoint. It turns out that it's their 2nd Birthday and they need cake! She explained to me how she was considering getting a large cake but was turned off by all the extra stuff that goes along with serving it....plates, knives, napkins...blah, gross. Luckily I was a frequent shopper at the wine store and she remembered all my talk of my mini cupcake biz. Now I am happy to announce that we will be supplying a whole hoopla of cupcakes to Dandelion's 2nd Birthday Party!! ow ow ow. I just received this in my inbox, and it made me smile....

"Hi Keavy,

I just wanted to share this story with you.

I just heard my female colleagues, both of whom was in the picture I sent you, having a discussion about cupcakes.

One of them, who told me her all-time favorite cupcake flavor is Red Velvet, said she just had a red velvet cupcake from Magnolia Bakery, and she said yours tasted so much better!
The icing, she said, was the huge difference.
While yours had this nice rich cream cheesy taste, Magnolia’s tasted just like butter and meringue, she explained.
Then the other one said, “No, the real difference is the cake part! Kumquat’s was really moist while most others are not.”

"NY act"

I was contacted a few months back by a Japanese TV company called BK Nexent, to be a part of a series they are running on channel 8 in Japan called NY act. It's a 5 minute long program that features a different New Yorker who is in a creative business, and follows them to different places they like to hang out in the city. We did the filming this past Sunday & Monday and it was definitely a new experience. They filmed me selling and baking cupcakes, all the while talking to the camera....I really hope I don't look as awkward as I felt.
After the filming was over I got a really sweet email from the woman who set up the filming. Inside the email was a thank you note as well as this absolutely adorable picture of her and all her colleagues at the production company.

Pics from the Top of the List Wine & Spirits Festival

As I mention before I was invited to participate in Wine & Spirit magazine's Top of the List wine and yummy food tasting. There was around 10 different restaurants there (including myself) and 100 different wines. You might take notice that the food to wine ration is slightly imbalanced, so people were having a good time by the end of the evening. I made a TON of friends. ;)

Wedding in the LES

This past weekend I set up cupcakes in one of the most beautiful venues I've seen in awhile. It's completely hidden away on Norfolk St. on the lower east side in a building I've walked by a million times. The entry way is completely unassuming, but once you walk in you feel like you are swept away to a majestic castle......or harry potters dining hall, which ever you prefer. I was told by the owner that this was where Sarah Jessica Parker had her wedding way back when. Pretty cool, no?

As you can see there's more than just cupcakes on the tower. It was a traditional Indian wedding so they had me add some of these yummy looking coconut desserts to the tier. They are common in India, and remind me of little coconut macaroons.

A Taste of Spring

This last Thursday Kumquat Cupcakery was invited to be a part of a large benefit held for the Adoption Institute called A Taste of Spring. Along with me there were other folks you might have heard of: Jean-Georges, David Burke, Cyril Renaud, Bobby Flay.....you know, this guy.....

There were 10 restaurants in total and I was the only one with dessert, so my table got a a lot of love. Everyone there was so complimentary and sweet it made my heart all warm and fuzzy.

I loved these guys. They made about 3 trips back to my table and filled their plate each time.

The next morning when I woke up to make my 6am trip over to the kitchen I opened my laptop and found one of the sweetest emails I've ever received since starting Kumquat. It went a little something like this.....

"Dear Kumquat Cupcakery,

I just returned from the Taste of Spring event at the Puck Building, where I was lucky enough to sample all sorts of culinary delights. My colleagues and I all agreed that your cupcakes totally stole the show. David Burke? Bobby Flay? Who are those guys? YOUR cupcakes were the best little bites going. Bacon. Wow. And the salted caramel and red velvet varieties were divine as well. Thank you so much for being there, it was delightful. Next time I am in Brooklyn, I am going to make a pilgrimage to your shop.

Morning world! I'm back....
This last month my amazing baker Sarah Haas left Kumquat to become manager at the new Crop to Cup cafe. I was super excited for her, but did not realize how much this would effect my work load.....yeeoza. It's been brutal, hence the no blogging.
So after weeks of working 13 hours a day, I'm very happy to say that Kumquat Cupcakery has a brand spankin new employee!! Ladies & Gentlemen may I introduce to you....

Graduating from both the FCI and the School of Audio Engineering, Megan is professionally trained in both food and music. She makes a mean grilled cheese, plays the cello like a rock star, and just got engaged 2 days ago! It's all very exciting.

She will be with me in the kitchen most of the time, but on occasion might work at the flea. If you see her, say hello!

Wedding Cupcakes

Here are some images from I wedding I set up this last weekend. If you think this combination of cupcakes looks familiar, you are correct! It's the same mix as my valentines day cupcakes sans red velvet.
I think the simplicity of the colors and flavors makes for a really beautiful design. They also matched the rest of the color scheme in the main room perfectly. I had to set the cupcakes up in the back stairway because the bride wanted the cupcakes to be rolled out as a surprise later.....so try to disregard the broom in the back of some of the images.

Pics from the Lamb Takedown!

Good old Metromix came to the rescue with some image of last nights Takedown.

Holy moly, what a night. 20 amazing lamb dishes, lamb tote bags, lamb tatoos, and even lamb performance art filled the Bell House last night. It was amazing. I was so impressed with the caliber of food that was being served! You can definitely tell that the stakes are being raised with each takedown. I walked away with a new lamb cutting board, and the honor of "Most Ewe-nique dish!" (get it??)
I also had the pleasure of hanging out and meeting other Food Curated subjects like Ben Sargent of the infamous Underground Lobster Pound, and Ross Hutchison and girlfriend Joanna Cybulski of Bacon Marmalade.

Lamb Cupcakes!! It was a corn cake with filo wrapper, chive and gorganzola mashed potatoes acting as the "frosting," deep friend braised lamb shank and a drizzle of blackberry sauce. yummm

It was a full house!

LAMB TAKEDOWN!!

Alright kids....here we go again...
First there was the Bacon Takedown, and no one believed that I could make a bacon cupcake worth eating. Yet it has now become the number one selling cupcake on my menu.
Now it's LAMB. Okay, even I'm a little skeptical at this point.
I have yet to actually make anything, but have a lot of ideas floating around in my head. Whether or not those ideas will actually work, well, we'll see. The really awesome thing about this takedown is that everyone gets 15-20 pounds free lamb to work with. Amazing! I chose the shank, so low and behold now I have 20 pounds of lamb shank in my freezer. good lord. what am I going to do with all of it?

I spent all night making a very top secret sauce that my dear mother has made time and time again over the years. This sauce is incredible. It takes about an hour to make and has 10 different ingredients in it. I would drizzle it over anything. I'm hoping it will be the magic touch to my lamb cupcake.

I stumbled upon this write up this morning, and think it's absolutely adorable....not to mention she gave Kumquat a pretty sweet write up!

I have had many, many, cupcakes and I am always on the look out for new ones to wow me. By far and away, Kumquat Cupcakery's are one of my favorites. They are mini morsels of perfection and are made by owner Keavy Landreth. They have amazing and creative combinations like lemon & lavender, coffee caramel bourbon, and maple bacon (sooo good), among others. Also, their cake to frosting ration is just perfect! All the cakes are magic, not too sweet and perfectly moist. They are only available in New York right now, at the Brooklyn Flea (only $1 each) or by placing an order, but I am positive that these cupcakes will one day make their way around America because they are way too good not to. Hester Street Fair

I'm so excited to tell you that Kumquat is branching out! We are going to be traveling all the way over the great divide to set up a booth in a land I had almost forgotten about - Manhattan.
I was made aware of the Hester Street Fair by my friend Liza of Food Curated, who told me I might want to look into it. Being VERY loyal to the Brooklyn Flea market I have turned down many other flea markets in the past, but there was something about this one that was just screaming for Kumquat Cupcakery to be a part of it. I wrote to inquire about a space and discovered that the guy who is responsible for this awesome market had ordered Kumquat cupcakes for his wedding a few months back! Alright...I'm in.

This does not mean that I will be leaving the Brooklyn Flea! I'll still be in Fort Green every Saturdays and One Hanson Place every Sunday.

The first weekend of the Hester Street Fair will be April 24th & 25th, 10am-6pm. Hope to see you there!

Flavors include:
-Dill cake with cream cheese "frosting" topped with smoked salmon and a caper relish (completely savory)
- Black and white cake topped with a sour cream chocolate frosting and a salt and vinegar potato chip (savory & sweet)
- Maple Cinnamon cake topped with vanilla frosting and a piece of bacon (savory & sweet)

New Crop to Cup Cafe in Brooklyn Heights!!

My good good friends Taylor and Alexis of Crop to Cup are finally biting the bullet and opening up a cute little cafe in Brooklyn Heights! There will be flea favorites there like Nunu Chocolate, Early Bird Granola, McClures, and ME!!
For those of you in the know, you know this is kinda a big deal for Kumquat. We are strictly a catering for parties and wedding type company and only sell our wares online and at the Brooklyn Flea. However I had this funny idea recently to sell specialized cupcakes to different venues, coming up with a flavor of cupcake that you would only be able to get at this certain venue that has hired me to make it. The first test was Deity Lounge with it's new Savory Cupcakes.
This is now what I'm thinking of doing for the Crop to Cup Cafe! I want to come up with 1 or 2 flavors that you can only get there and no where else. But what flavors?? I'm having such a hard time deciding! All you eaters and cooks out there help me out! What flavor cupcake do you want to see at the cafe?

Heritage Radio with Matt Timms

Everyone knows that Matt Timms is awesome, so when he called me up and asked if I wanted to be on his radio show I said HELLS YES without even asking what this was going to entail. What it did entail were 5 ingredients, a three course meal, and your MIND. You can find all the rules of the game on his page at the Heritage Food Network. It turned out to be a ton of fun, and it might even be a game I start pulling out of my back pocket at dinner parties.....watch out.

Village Voice Choice Eats Event

(forgot to post this last night....oops!)
I just got back from the Village Voice Choice Eats event, and let me tell ya, it was pretty darn cool. I was down in the VIP section with people like Sam Mason from Dinner with the band, Fette Sau, and The Fatty Crab. We were put in our own little section in the basement so it was a more personal experience between the restaurants and the VIP's.
The VIP tasting ended right when the main event began so I was able to pack up and head upstairs to join the massive amount of people attending this crazy feast. I sampled as many little bites of heaven as I could until I felt slightly ill and then decided it was time to leave. All and all....a great night.

Deity's Small Bite menu

Deity Lounge will be officially adding my new savory flavors to the menu this Sunday, and will continue to sell them every weekend in the future. The flavors you can find will be Smoked salmon with a caper relish (my FAV), Black and white cake with a salt and vinegar chip on top, and the good old Maple & Bacon cupcake.

Savory Cupcakes

I got an email the other day from the fine folks at Deity Lounge asking about my cupcakes. Apparently they came across the bacon cupcakes at the flea and (of course) fell in love with them. The email was very sweet and seemed perfectly normal....until...."would you be able to make a few completely savory cupcakes for us?" Ummm, is this a cupcake related homework assignment? YES! I'm in, let's do this.
So yesterday I spent all morning surrounded by some of my favorite savory items (beer, potato chips, smoked salmon). I ended up creating 3 cakes with no sugar, and a frosting containing mostly goat cheese. My kitchen mates were more than a little excited about this new development.
Needless to say they were DELICIOUS, and I'm happy to announce that Deity Lounge will be selling them starting this Sunday at their party to introduce the new menu. I'll be there so definitely swing by and say hello!

Yes, I know.....I haven't blogged in over a week. Bad. me. I have a really good excuse though, we have been crazy busy!!!! Who knew that the month of March was such a party month?? Right?
Let's jump right in....

BROOKLYN BRIDE
I was one of the lucky brooklynites that was asked to join the wedding expo this past Sunday at BAM. Having worked right across from BAM for over a year now, I was shocked when I realized I had never actually gone inside! I had an awesome time getting to talk to new people from the industry like photographer Kristina Hill, as well as old friends like the kids from Stinky Brooklyn, and Andy from Nunu Chocolates. NOT TO MENTION 300 soon to be brides!!.....I guess that was pretty fun too. ;)

CABARET GOURMET
The play company puts on a benefit every year called the Cabaret Gourmet where they bring in 10 different chefs from restaurants in NY to give away there goods and enjoy an eventing of song and dance. I love going to events like this, one because I actually get slap on a pair of heals, and two because it brings me to an event that I would have never gotten to be a part of had I not started Kumquat. Everyone at the play company was incredibly nice, and all the food was AMAZING. You can't really go wrong with mini chicken pot pies.
I also got to meet Bryan Batt who plays Sal on Mad Men. We chatted for a bit and he told me when he did "jazz hands" on stage it was for me.......swoon.

My good friend and office mate Zoe Timms (sister to the infamous Matt Timms), has created a wonderful event to help promote her non profit organization. It's called cupcakes for a cause and it's featuring our nummy cupcakes. Zoe will personally hand deliver 2 dozen kumquat cupcakes to anyone who donates the most to her organization every month.

Women's Education Project educates young women from the poorest backgrounds to become college graduates. As teachers, health care workers, and entrepreneurs, they have healthier families and become leaders in their community. WEP has centers in Madurai and Hyderabad, South India. Wedding at Galapagos Art Space

I have to admit, I might have been a little skeptical when I heard that I would be setting up cupcakes at Galapagos Art Space for a wedding. I've been a long time fan of Galapagos; I used to frequent their space in Williamsburg for friends shows, dance parties, and general debauchery. But a wedding? That seemed like a bit of a stretch......I was so so so wrong.
I secretly take mental notes of which venues I like when set up a wedding (just in case!), and Galapagos might be my new favorite. The giant pod shaped tables surrounded by water, the balcony seating which makes you feel like your watching a fantastic show, and the hundreds of candles lining the wood and concrete walls make it so. so. Brooklyn.

For the cupcake tower Angela (bride) wanted a small cake on top that would hold her mothers old cake topper. A boy and girl kissing on a bench....adorable. She then wanted to make sure she got a wide variety of flavors, but also wanted to incorporate the white cake on top, so I suggested a gradient. We did a mix of both regular cupcake designs and roses to make the set up playful, but still elegant. My favorite are the peanut butter roses.....

The Future of food and more titillating surprises

Happy Monday morning bloggers!

I've got my cup of Crop to Cup, I'm well rested, and am ready to let you in on what's goin' on this week......
FIRST up is that I (Keavy) have been invited to attend a panel tomorrow evening on the Future of Food at 92Y Tribeca.

I'm super excited, apparently there are already 275 people who have RSVPed! I'll be surrounded by familiar faces like Neki from Early Bird, and the fine folks from Rooster design group so it's sure to be a fun reunion. I'll be setting up shop and selling my goods to anyone who needs a sweet fix after the lecture.

SECONDLY (and this is for mature eyes only), I've been invited to create a custom cupcake for Coco De Mer, the luxury erotic boutique in lower manhattan. (!!!) How cool is that?!
Every week Coco De Mer hosts "a lesson in the art of loving" where they invite 20 women (or men) to come in to the store, take a class by the worlds leading sex teacher, drink champagne, and eat something sweet. That something sweet will now be their very own kumquat cupcake, and will only be available through events and classes at Coco De Mer.
I have yet to actually create the cupcake, but it's got my little brain reeling with possibilities. Are there any flavors you can think of that might compliment their style well? Let me know!

Boxes are made!!

4:00pm....the boxes are finally all put together! We are going to have boxes of 5, 12, and 24, and will be featuring the Valentines Day mix as well as 8 flavors from the regular menu.

I love the new boxes of 5! Addoooorrrable.

Now it's time to seal them up tight so they stay fresh, and wait for Liz from Liddabit to pick me up so we can head over to the store and start setting up decorations!
